How many officers are generally hired at a time?
The recruitment process allows us to create a list of qualified candidates. As vacancies occur on the department due to retirements or newly created positions they are filled from the list.

What are the minimum qualifications before applying to become a police officer with the Town of Cumberland?
1. Age/Military: Applicants must be at least 21 years of age, or have served two (2) years active military service with an honorable discharge.
2. Education: Most of the progressive agencies in Rhode Island place a high value on a college education. An Associate’s Degree or Sixty (60) College Credits, prior to appointment is one of the minimum qualifications to be a Cumberland Police Officer.
3. Operator/Drivers License: You must possess a valid operator’s/driver’s license
What are the requirements for the physical agility test?
The physical fitness test battery consists of five (5) basic tests. A sixth test (body fat measurement) is only necessary if the threshold weight test is not passed. Each test is a scientific valid test. The test to be given for both entering into and graduating the Rhode Island Municipal Police Training Academy are described as follows:

What is the swim test?
The Rhode Island Municipal Police Training Academy requires all recruits to pass a water safety course during the academy. The swim test by the Cumberland Police Department requires applicants to swim the length of a pool and back without assistance.
Start now, with an ongoing physical fitness program, since you will need to be in good physical condition to successfully compete for employment and complete the police academy.
The applicant must pass every test.
What if I have received a traffic ticket or had problems with the police in the past, can I still apply?
Yes. However, the nature of the offense, severity of the offense, length of time since the offense is all factored into the selection process.
How can I get an application?
Applications are only available when a recruitment process is in place. An announcement will be listed on www.cumberlandpolice.com as well as other media markets. Once the recruitment process is open you may download an application from our web site, or pick up one from Police Headquarters. A $25.00 non-refundable examination fee for the written exam (may be waived in cases of financial burden) is required the day of the written exam. Completed applications must be brought or mailed to Police Headquarters. Faxed or e-mailed applications will not be accepted and will be considered void.
How does the selection process work?
Applicants must successfully complete/pass the following:
- Recruitment Orientation Session
- Physical Fitness Test (According to the Rhode Island Municipal Academy entrance requirements)
- Written Examination
- Basic Swimming Skills Test
- Oral Board Interviews
- Extensive Background Check
- Psychological and Medical Examinations (as required by Rhode Island Law)
Do you have to be a United States citizen to become a police officer?
Yes. The law requires that peace officers be U.S. citizens or permanent resident aliens who are eligible for citizenship.
During the testing process, do you receive additional points for being in the military service?
No. However, military service, education, training and/or work experience will be included in your background file for review by the administration during the selection process.
Will I be paid while I attend the academy?
Yes. While attending the police academy you will receive the regular salary for a police recruit, which includes Health and Dental Care benefits.
Do you live at the academy?
No. The general hours of the academy are 0800-1700 with some weekends and nights.
What kind of work schedule do the patrol officers have?
Once you have completed all training and you are sworn in as a Police Officer you will work four 10-hour shifts with three days off.
